"Eat like a human being, drink like a human being, dress up, marry, have children, get politically active — suffer abuse, bear with a headstrong brother, father, son, neighbor, or companion. Show us these things so we can see that you truly have learned from the philosophers."
— Epictetus, Discourses
Philosophy plays a big part in my trading mindset and most definitely keeps me level headed and grounded. One of my philosophies and I think I've mentioned it before in these journals is; "Don't expect anything from the markets when you are trading and you won't be disappointed!" You have to remember that the markets don't owe us anything and will have a habit of going against us from time to time, so it is up to us to deal with those situations when they arise. Always cut your losses at a controlled and manageable level, BEFORE it's too late! Leaving it too long will put your trading bank at serious risk! You have to look at the bigger picture as you want to be in this for the long haul, without having to continuously re-load your trading bank.
Here is another philosophy that I have also mentioned before and I use it every time that I am trading; "Trade what you are seeing happen and not what you think or hope will happen!" This little gem will save you a lot of money, if you can do this.
Don't end up in the land of hope; hoping that a trade will swing back your way and you find yourself trapped like a rabbit in the headlights of an oncoming car, because before you know it you will be staring at a big loss! As I always say; "If you are hoping a trade will swing back in your favour, you've left it too late!"
So there are things to be philosophical about when trading and these things help make up the psyche for your trading mindset. Having the correct mindset when you are trading gives you a massive advantage, because it's all about you and how you react to situations.
Food for thought maybe?
