Fall Back, Spring Forward
65 Ways to View a Setback
Calvin Watts, 2 December 2024
When shit happens, it's easy to think "I can't do this" or "I'm a failure." These automatic thoughts are the result of ingrained beliefs about our abilities and self-worth, shaped by past experiences, societal pressures, or our mams and dads. For instance, if a sports trader experiences a loss, they might think, "I don't have what it takes," without considering variance, the strategy behind the setback and how they might adjust their approach next time. This mindset, known as a fixed mindset, leads us to see setbacks as unchangeable judgements about our abilities. But this is only one way to interpret the situation.
The way we react to a setback impacts our next steps. Whilst a fixed mindset chucks us into a negativity loop, shifting our perspective turns that setback into a catalyst for improvement.
The following list of 65 perspectives doesn't necessarily need to be read. It is designed to demonstrate the many ways we can reinterpret the same event. Each perspective offers a fresh lens through which we can view a setback.
And why only 65 perspectives? Well, I ran out of word count.
